Shrewsbury National Sale results

The champion from the pre-sale show, Jimmy Douglas’ Middlemuir Messi son has sold at 17,000gns, with the buyer believed to be the Robinson family, Northern Ireland. This was 33H 12:135 out of a dam by Muiresk King of Diamonds.

Selling at 8500gns was Robbie Wilson’s first of the day FNV 12:036, a son of Forkins Figo ET bred out of a Strathisla Schumacher daughter who’s dam as champion at the Highland in 2003 and 2004. Messrs Soulsby, Cumbria, bought this one.


A little earlier at 7000gns was another Messi son from Cairness, 33H 12:062. He is out of a dam by Cairness Achievement. Buying him was Jim Fleming, Halhill.

Shrewsbury show results

Jimmy Douglas’ Cairness flock has once again claimed the overall championship at the Suffolk Sheep Society’s National Show and Sale at Shrewsbury today, with his champion coming from the single ram class.

This leader was 33H 12:135, a Middlemuir Messi son out of a dam by Muiresk King of Diamonds.

In reserve was a lamb from Chris and Sally Holmes Rookery flock which had come from their pen of three. This was DND 12:018, a son of Cairness Liam out of a dam by Cairness Almighty the Second which was first prize at Balmoral Show as a ewe lamb.

Winning the shearling ram class was Sandy Fraser with a tup by Solwaybank Sovereign out of a dam by Hayfield Hesston. He had previously been interbreed champion at Newark and Notts Show. Second in this class was Robin Irwin with a shearling by Cairness Carbon out of a dam by Glenhead Glaramara and third was Viv Samuel with a tup by Rookery High Power out of a dam by Cairness Impact.

In the recorded ram class the red ticket went to Willie Tait with a lamb by Shannagh Resolve and out of a dam by Baileys Invincible, T86 12:058. Second to him was a lamb from  Roger and Mike Weaver P50 12:079. He is by Stockton Nobleman and out of a dam by Perrinpit Kernel. And in third was a lamb from John Key, L20:12049, a Langside Premier son out of  a dam by Sitlow Centurion.

The open ram lamb class was won by the overall champion from Jimmy Douglas, with Chris and Sally Holmes in second with their lamb DND 12005. This Haddo High Voltage son is out of a dam by Marwood Millenium Man and was breed champion at Three Counties. Then in third was a lamb fro Gary Beacm JFF 12042, this is by  Cairness Cyclone and out of a dam by Strathisla Shadrach.

Winning the Gigot class were Aled and Nia Williams with their lamb NCY 12:016 by Rhaeadr Richie McCaw out of a dam by Rhaeadr Obama. Second to him was a ram lamb from Myfyr Evans by Baileys BMW and out of a dam by Conveth Gold Bar. Third spot went to Messrs Ligget with their ram lamb  by  Rhaeadr Red Bull and out of a dam by Conveth Royal Flush.

The group of three was won by Robbie Wilson, with Willie Tait second and Chris Holmes third.

Shrewsbury Suffolk championship goes to Cairness

The championship in today’s pre-sale show at the National Suffolk Sale,Shrewsbury, has gone to Jimmy Douglas’ Cairness flock.

Taking top honours was 33H:11:026, the Baileys Bacchus son which won the ram class earlier in the day. This one is out of a dam by Cairness Renovator which is sister to the dam of last year’s Shrewsbury champion.

Reserve overall was the second prize ram lamb from the same class from Myfyr Evans’ Rhaeadr flock. He is a Baileys Brigadier The Second son out of a dam by Thurston Calzaghe. This one is Myfyr’s first in the catalogue, A12: 11:068 and goes back to a 6500gns Baileys ewe.

Taking the group of three class was Myfyr Evans with his trio, two Baileys BMW sons and one Baileys Brigadier The Second son (lots 143, 144 and 145). Second group of three went to Robbie Wilson, Strathisla, with one by Strathisla Sea Bird, another by Cairness Stockbroker and one by Glenhead Golden Phoenix (lots 153, 154 and 155). Third place here went to John Sinnett, Stockton, with a pair by Stockton Thriller The Second and one by Stockton Lad The Second (lots 92,94 and 96).

In the best Gigot class the winner was Stuart Davies, Beaufort, with a Glenhead Golden Phoenix son out of a dam by Strathisla Massa, this was LTD:11:016.

Second in this class was Ross Lawrence, Roundacre, with a Strathbeg Stan The Man son out of a dam by Glenho Gurka, and third was George Stuart, Birness, with a Rhaeadr Flash Harry son out of a dam by Castlewellan Crackshot.

Report Cairness sale 2010

Report by H&H:

New interest for the Suffolk breed created a strong selling trade at the annual sale of in lamb females from the Cairness flock of Jimmy Douglas. Also this day were consignments from the Stockton flock of Messrs Sinnett and from the Hazeltree flock of County Turf Ltd, together with the Dispersal Sale of the Wells flock of Messrs Sleigh.

Buyers were attracted from Inverness, Aberdeenshire in the north down to Devon in the south. Also from both the north and south of Ireland and Europe.

Leading the sale at 12,000gns was a shearling gimmer from the Cairness flock. She was an ET daughter of Cairness Just The Best and carries the Muiresk Zidane breeding in her mothers pedigree. She sold in lamb to Cairness Liam and went to Dan Tynan of Co.Laois, Eire to form a new flock.

Following at 6,000gns was a ewe lamb shown by Messrs Sinnett. This January born single lamb, sired by Morris Lee and out of a Cairness Impact bred daughter, was knocked down to a joint purchase from Dan Tynan of Eire and Jimmy Douglas for his Cairness flock based in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.

Next in line at 2,000gns was a pair of gimmers from the Cairness flock. First to capture the 2,000gn mark was an embryo daughter of Cairness Almighty The Second and out of a Crosemanor Commandeur sired mother who was grand-dam of the Edinburgh Champion sold earlier this season. This lady sold in lamb to Cairness Caeus and joins the Biffie flock for J & L Scott of Peterhead, Aberdeen.

Also reaching 2,000gns was the second Cairness gimmer entry, a Cairness Cold Play sired gimmer and bred from one of the best breeding ewe of the breed a Muiresk Manat daughter. She also sold in lamb to Cairness Caeus and goes to E Williams for this Gweirglodd flock near Llanfairpwll.

Selling for 1,900gns was a two shear ewe from the Cairness pen. Sired by Cairness Just The Best and bred from a Collessie Cut Above mother, this embryo ewe sold carrying Cairness Achievement sired lambs. She travels to Southern Ireland for Oliver Dean of Co.Kildaire, Eire.

Local breeder Darren Jones of the Thurston flock based on the outskirts of Carlisle paid 1,800gns for a daughter of the 68,000gn Muiresk Kings of Diamonds. This two shear ewe, out of a Cairness Cellnet bred mother, also sold in lamb to Cairness Caeus.

Also selling for 1,800gns was a ewe lamb from the Stockton flock. Sired by Rhaeadr Radar, and going back to Wells Extra Special on the mother pedigree, this stylish lady was knocked down to MW Waycott for this Longridge flock based in Devon.

Leading the Wells dispersal flock sale was a ewe lamb selling for 1,800gns. This was a Whitestone Warrior bred daughter and is out of a Glenho Royal Edition sired mother going back to Strathisla Kingsway on her pedigree. She was sold to Jimmy Douglas for his Cairness flock.

The top price for the Hazeltree flock was 750gns for a two shear ewe sired by Solwaybank Sovereign and bred from a Cairness U’ll Do mother. She sold in lamb to Cairness Just Lucky and sold to JGb & GM Redmayne of Staveley, Kendal.

Averages – Cairness flock 31 ewes £1,005.63, 30 gimmers £1,276.45. Stockton flock 17 ewes £599.74, 6 gimmers £920.50, 16 ewe lambs £1,171.41. Wells flock 25 ewes £602.70, 11 gimmers £683.45, 8 ewe lambs £543.38. Hazeltree flock 5 ewes £457.80, 10 gimmers £559.65.

Report fom Cairness Sale (Carlisle); top of 12,000gns

I’ve now got a full report from Saturday’s Suffolk sale at Carlisle, so here is an updated account of the trade.

Selling for  the day’s top price of 12,000gns was a shearling ewe from Jimmy Douglas’ Cairness flock. This one is an ET sister to both Cairness Achievement and 65,000gns Cairness Castello. This one, 33H L70, is by Cairness Just the Best and out of a dam by Muiresk Zidane. She sold in-lamb to Cairness Liam and heads to Eire to Dan Tynan, Doon, Montraith. Mr Tynan’s livestock enterprises are of course managed by Pat Greaney, formerly farm manager for Tom Bailey.

At 6000gns was a ewe lamb from John Sinnett’s Stockton flock, 72H N122, she is sired by Morris Les and out of a dam by Cairness Impact. This one sold in a two way split, with Jimmy Douglas and Dan Tynan each taking a half share in her.

A pair from Cairness then sold at 2000gns, with the first being the first of Jimmy Douglas’ shearlings, 33H L65. Sired by Cairness Almighty the Second and out of a dam by Crosemanor Commandeur which was bred in the Glenisla flock of the late Gordon Wilson, she was sold in lamb to Cairness Caeus. She was bought by J and L Scott, Maud, Peterhead.

The other at this price was 33h L56, an ET bred daughter of Cairness Cold Play out of an 11,000gns Muiresk bred dam by Muiresk Manat. She was also sold in lamb to Caeus. Buying this one was E Williams, Penmynydd, Llanfairpwll.

Next best from Cairness was a 1900gns sale for a one-crop ewe by Cairness Just the Best, 33H K53. She is ET bred out of an 11,000gns Laurelbank ewe by Collessie Cut Above and sold in lamb to Cairness Achievement. She went to Oliver Dean, Co Kildaire.

Then at 1800gns was an ET bred daughter of Muiresk King of Diamonds out of a dam by Cairness Cellnet. She was in lamb to Cairness Caeus and went to D Jones, Thurstonfield, Carlisle.

At the same money was another ewe lamb from Stockton, 72H N6. She is by Rhaedr Radar and out of a dam by Stockton Eric. Buying this one was Michael Waycott, Ashburton, Devon. And also at this price was the top prices lot from the Wells flock dispersal for the Sleigh family. This was a ewe lamb by Whitestone Warrior and out of a dam by Glenho Royal Edition. She headed back to Aberdeenshire with Jimmy Douglas.

Good trade suffolk females at Beeston

A strong trade for Suffolk females was seen at Beeston last Saturday with prices topping at 3600gns for a one-lamb ewe from Ross Lawrence’s Roundacre flock. This one was a Meiklson Impression daughter sold carrying a pair to this year’s Edinburgh champion Cairness Kaos. She sold to John Gould for the Rychmae flock, Buxton.

Next best was a 3100gns bid for a shearling ewe from the Cairness consignment of Jimmy Douglas. This one is by Cairness Just the Best and was carrying twins to 20,000gns sire Cairness Achievement. She was bought by James and Liam Scott, Peterhead.

The next two top calls in the senior ewes were also made for Cairness stock, with 2000gns paid for a three crop ewe by Cairness Save the Day by Bill Troup, Sauchen, for the Whitestone flock. Then making 1500gns was a Cragroe Craftsman daughter which sold to Gary Beacom, Northern Ireland for the Lakeview flock.

Topping the ewe lambs was a 1700gns sale for one from John Sinnett’s Stockton flock. This was a daughter of Morris Les which sold to J L Davies, Aberaeron for the Frongoy flock.

A pair of ewe lambs then traded at 1450gns, the first being a Thurston Calzaghe daughter from David Jones, Ruthin. She sold to Mary Cornish, Buckfastleigh, Devon. Second at this price was another from the Stockton offering by Morris Les. She was taken by Mike Davies and Sons for the Safaddan flock, Brecon.

Averages; 54 ewes £590.92, 44 shearling ewes £514.71, 42 ewe lambs £402.75 (Wright Manley).

Manorhouse and Craven Suffolks sell to 1200gns

A top call of 1200gns was the highlight of the dispersal of the Manorhouse and Craven flocks of Suffolks for father and son team David and John Calvert, West Marton, Skipton.

This top call was made by H Annett and Sons, Morpeth, Northumberland, when buying a one lamb ewe by Saffadan Smartie carrying a set of twins by Kings Talent.

Another of the same age and by the same sire, but this time carrying a single to Westcarse Wallace then sold at 950gns to C Lowry, Rockfield, Monmouthshire, while another one lamb ewe again by Smartie sold to Messrs Annett for 900gns.

Topping the two lamb ewes was a 780gns bid for a Glenhead Grimaldi daughter carrying twins by Kings Talent. She was bought by P McFadzean, Dumfries, while one by Manorhouse Solo sold to Geoff Riby, Bridlington.

In the three lamb ewes a 720gns sale saw a Birness Goldstorm daughter sell to Mr Lowry, with a four crop ewe by 30,000gns sire Cairness Golden Star sold to C R Emmett, Truro, for 750gns.

Leading the shearling ewes was a 720gns bid for another daughter of Safaddan Smartie, carrying a pair by Rhaedr Rocket Star. She also headed to Cornwall, being bought by N Dalgarmo.

But the trade of the day was reserved for the ewe lambs which peaked at 920gns for a daughter of Craven Cracker which sold to Mr McFadzean. Then a Kings Talent daughter made 800gns when selling to J A and M Gornall, Clitheroe,and another by Cracker sold at 750gns to Robert Percival, Carlisle.

Averages; 30 flock ewes £541.50, 16 shearling ewes £488.25, 14 ewe lambs £553.50 (Wright Manley with CCM Auctions).
