Today’s production sale form Jimmy Douglas’ Cairness flock of Suffolks topped at 8000gns for a gimmer by Cairness Cylone. This one, 33H 11 101 is out of a dam by Muiresk King of Diamonds and goes back to the great breeding Muiresk Rainbow Quest. This ET sister to Cairness Custom sold in-lamb to Cairness Diamond Jubilee, a homebred tup lamb which Jimmy regards as one of the best he’s ever bred. She was claimed by Gary Beacom, Northern Ireland.
Following that in the Cairness run was a ewe by Cairness Achievement 33H N14. She is out of a dam by Whitestone Warrior and sold carrying lambs to Rhaeadr Roger Ramjet. Buying her was Gordon Troup, Aberdeenshire.
And at 2600gns Jimmy then sold another ewe, this time 33H L67, a Cairness Just the Best daughter out of a dam by Muiresk Zidane. In-lamb to Bailesy Streets Ahead and a full ET sister to Cairness Achievement, she was bought by E Williams, Yyns, Monmouthshire.
Then making 2100gns and selling to Sandy Fraser was a gimmer by Cairness Caius, 33H 11 016. This one is out of a dam by Cairness Coldplay and goes back to Muiresk Manat. She was sold in-lamb to Rhaeadr Roger Ramjet.
In the draft from Robbie Wilson’s Strathisla flock the top call was a bid of 4500gns for a gimmer by Strathisla Sea Bird, FNV 11 135. She is out of a dam by Strathisla Schumacher and is in-lamb to Rookery Rooney. Taking this one back across the water was Mark Priestley for the Limestone flock.
Another gimmer from Robbie then sold at 3000gns to the Soulsby family, with this one being FNV 11 077. Sired by Cairness Kaos she is out of a dam by Schumacher and was in-lamb to Forkins Figo.
At 2800gns came a bid from Messrs Wilson, Kelton, Castle Douglas for a gimmer by Glenhead Golden Phoenix and out of a dam by Strathisla Seabird. This one, FNV 11 117, is in-lamb to Strathisla Stifler.
Robbie then took 2600gns from Mark Priestley for a Sea Bird daughter out of a dam by Stathisla Speed which is ET sister to Schumacher. She is in-lamb to Stifler too.
Ross Lawrence then bid 2000gns for a Kaos daughter, FNV 11 052. She is out of a dam by Speed and was sold in-lamb to Forkins Figo.
Best from John Sinnett’s Stockton offering was a ewe lamb at 4000gns which sold to Jimmy Douglas. This one, 72H 12 1649, is by Conchar PR and out of a dam by Cairness Impact.
And topping Gordon Troup’s Whitestone draft was another heading back to Cairness. This was a gimmer, L25 11 006, by Cairness Liam and out of a Kings High and Mighty daughter. She sold in-lamb to Cairness Diamond Jubilee.
Averages: Cairness – 13 ewes £1190 and 32 gimmers £1038. Strathisla – seven ewes £769 and 21 gimmers £1524. Stockton – 12 ewe lambs £818. Whitestone – nine gimmers £940.

Suffolks see 97% clearance and Lamb Rams rise by £150 on the year
Once again Suffolk breeders enjoyed a strong selling trade at the Carlisle & Northern Counties Society show and sale. A good quality offering of sheep were forward and this resulted in the overall sale averages rising up by £150 on the year.
Topping the sale at 2,400gns was an aged ram shown by Dumfriesshire breeder Hazel Martindale of the Landale flock. Rhaedr Nadal, a son of Baileys Blockbuster and out of a Whitestone Washington bred mother, has been used successfully throughout the flock with many of his daughters retained. He was Champion stock ram in the West & Central Club competition 2010. He was purchased by S Higginson of Castle Douglas.
Following at 1,700gns was a 2nd prize lamb ram consigned by Darren Jones of the Thurston flock based near Carlisle. Sired by Glenhead Grandmaster and bred from a Middlemuir Winston sired dam, this lamb was knocked down to Alloaks flock for Messrs Pinny of Northants.
Close behind at 1,600gns was the days 1st prize untrimmed lamb and reserve overall champion, a lamb shown by Aberdeenshire breeder P Machray of the Middlemuir flock. It was his first lamb from the pen that took this price, a son of the 2010 Edinburgh Champion Baileys Bacchus. Out of a Cairness Coldplay bred mother, this lamb was sold to Messrs Kennedy of Long Marton, Appleby for their Wayside flock.

Yorkshire breeder Mark Evans of the Jubilee flock featured as the next leading price at 1,500gns. A lamb ram, sired by Strathisla Seville and going back to Strathisla Shirocco on his mothers pedigree, was successfully bought by Messrs Vickers of Alnwick, Northumberlaand.

Following are 1,400gns were four lots. The first was a shearling ram from R Redpath of Kelso with his 3rd prize entry from this years Royal Highland Show. This home bred entry, a son of Rhaedar The Real Deal and goes back to a Plasllwewlyn Playboy bred mother. He was also purchased by S Higginson of Castle Douglas.

Next entry at the 1,400gn mark was the first lamb from the Ortum pen belonging to Messrs Garner & Son of Lincs. This lamb, sired by Bentley Royal Standard and out of a Bentley Wilko bred mother, was sold to KW Stewart of the Kelso flock.

The third and fourth lots to make 1,400gns were both lambs from the Jubilee pen of Mark Evans. The first by Strathisla Seville and out of a Strathisla Shirocco sired mother, sold to Messrs Nelson of Castle Douglas for their Redcroft flock. The second entry also carries the Strathisla breeding on his sire and dam pedigree and goes back to Jubilee Godfather. He was knocked down to P Grenfell of Morpeth, Northumberland.

Suffolk trade here at Carlisle today has been strong, with commercial buyers driving the bidding from start to finish.
Best of the day was a 2400gns call for an aged ram from Hazel Martindale. This was a Rhaeadr ram by Baileys Blockbuster and out of a Whitestone Washington-sired dam. He sold to S Higgninson, Gelston, Castle Douglas.
Then selling at 1700gns was a Cairness See the Stars son from Darren Jones’ Thurston flock. This one is out of a dam by Glenhead Grandmaster and sold to Merrick and Julie Pinny for the Alloaks flock, Northampton.At 1600gns was a tup lamb from Pat Machray’s Middlemuir flock. This was a Baileys Bacchus son out of a dam by Cairness Cold Play. He had been reserve champion in the pre-sale show and sold to N and J M Kennedy, Long Marton, Appleby.Selling for 1500gns was one from the Junbilee flock of Mark Evans. This was a Strahisla Seville son out of a dam by Strathials Shirocco and is maternal brother to a 1500gns ewe lamb. Buying this one were F E Vickers and Son, Alnwick.
Following that at 1400gns was a shearling tup from R F Repath’s Westmuir flock. This Rhaeadr The Read Deal son is out of a dam by Plasllewelyn Playboy and sold to S Higginson, Castle Douglas.
And then a trio of ram lambs sold at the same price, with the first being a top 1% lamb from the Garner family’s Ortum flock. This Bentley Royal Standard son is out of a Bentley Wilko daughter and has an index of 5.14. He went home with Kevin Stewart, Kelso
A pair from Mark Evans made the same money, with the first being a Strathisla Seaville son out of a dam by Strathisla Shirocco. He was bought by J and A Nelson, Parton, Castle Douglas.
The other from this home was also a Seaville son and out of a similarly bred dam, this one caught the eye of P Grenfell, Acklington, Morpeth.

I’ve now got a full report from Saturday’s Suffolk sale at Carlisle, so here is an updated account of the trade.
Selling for the day’s top price of 12,000gns was a shearling ewe from Jimmy Douglas’ Cairness flock. This one is an ET sister to both Cairness Achievement and 65,000gns Cairness Castello. This one, 33H L70, is by Cairness Just the Best and out of a dam by Muiresk Zidane. She sold in-lamb to Cairness Liam and heads to Eire to Dan Tynan, Doon, Montraith. Mr Tynan’s livestock enterprises are of course managed by Pat Greaney, formerly farm manager for Tom Bailey.
At 6000gns was a ewe lamb from John Sinnett’s Stockton flock, 72H N122, she is sired by Morris Les and out of a dam by Cairness Impact. This one sold in a two way split, with Jimmy Douglas and Dan Tynan each taking a half share in her.
A pair from Cairness then sold at 2000gns, with the first being the first of Jimmy Douglas’ shearlings, 33H L65. Sired by Cairness Almighty the Second and out of a dam by Crosemanor Commandeur which was bred in the Glenisla flock of the late Gordon Wilson, she was sold in lamb to Cairness Caeus. She was bought by J and L Scott, Maud, Peterhead.
The other at this price was 33h L56, an ET bred daughter of Cairness Cold Play out of an 11,000gns Muiresk bred dam by Muiresk Manat. She was also sold in lamb to Caeus. Buying this one was E Williams, Penmynydd, Llanfairpwll.
Next best from Cairness was a 1900gns sale for a one-crop ewe by Cairness Just the Best, 33H K53. She is ET bred out of an 11,000gns Laurelbank ewe by Collessie Cut Above and sold in lamb to Cairness Achievement. She went to Oliver Dean, Co Kildaire.
Then at 1800gns was an ET bred daughter of Muiresk King of Diamonds out of a dam by Cairness Cellnet. She was in lamb to Cairness Caeus and went to D Jones, Thurstonfield, Carlisle.
At the same money was another ewe lamb from Stockton, 72H N6. She is by Rhaedr Radar and out of a dam by Stockton Eric. Buying this one was Michael Waycott, Ashburton, Devon. And also at this price was the top prices lot from the Wells flock dispersal for the Sleigh family. This was a ewe lamb by Whitestone Warrior and out of a dam by Glenho Royal Edition. She headed back to Aberdeenshire with Jimmy Douglas.

SUFFOLK IN LAMB FEMALES & EMPTY HOGGS

A small but quality selection of Suffolk sheep were presented to the annual show and sale of in lamb females and empty ewe lambs held at Carlisle.

Father and son team, Hugh and Harry Annett of Widdington judged the pre-show classes and awarded the championship ticket to Mark Evans of West Yorkshire with a ewe lamb from his Jubilee flock. This eye catching lamb, a daughter of Strathbeg Stan The Man and out of a Strathisla bred mother, sold for the top price of sale at 1,500gns. She was knocked down to Northern Ireland breeders, AJ & NAJ Robinson of Downpatrick, Co.Down for their Benrafton flock.

The next price tag at 1,020gns also came from the Jubilee pen of Mark Evans. This four figure priced ewe lamb, sired by Strathisla St.Nicholas and was also out of a Strathisla bred mother. She sold to JM Nisbet of the Sornmains flock based near Mauchline, Ayrshire.
Selling for 700gns was the first entry from the Conveth flock of CA Proctor & Co, Turriff, Aberdeenshire. This shearling gimmer, a daughter of Strathisla Schumacher and bred from a home bred dam by Als’now Aristocrat, sold in lamb to Cairness Achievement to JM Nisbet of Mauchline.
Following at 660gns was a gimmer shown by Northumberland breeder Don Robertson of the Northyne flock. Sired by Glenhead Infusion and out of a Solwaybank Insignia sired mother, she sold in lamb to the homebred ram Northtyne Drifter. She was knocked down to TR & EA Milburn of Greenhead, Carlisle.

Topping the Thurston pen for local breeder Darren Jones was a three crop ewe. Collecting the reserve championship ticket, this daughter of Thurston Chieftain and out of a Cairness Spellbound sired mother, he was purchased by JA & M Gornall of Clitheroe, Lancs for their Pendleton flock.
Averages – 10 ewes £323.40, 36 shearling gimmers £418.54, 12 ewe lambs £493.50.
Suffolk females sold to a top call of 5000gns at Carlilse yesterday, with the top price paid by Robbie Wilson, Strathisla, for a ewe lamb from Mark Evans’ Jubilee flock.
Jimmy Douglas, Cairness, has topped today’s Suffolk trade at Carlisle with 5000gns sale for the day’s pre-sale show champion.
By Cairness Just the Best, this lamb is out of a ewe bred in the late Gordon Wilson’s Strathisla flock.
