In the Suffolk rings the top price of the day came from Robbie Wilson’s Strathisla pen, he is a Rhaeadr Ring-a-Ding son and sold to Mark Evans, Jubillee flock at £5000.
Top price shearling in this section came at £4400 from John Park’s Drinkstone pen, he is by Drinkstone Durham Improver and out of a home bred ewe. He was purchased by the Ingram family, Logie Durno.
Then at £4200 was Ian and Judith Barbour with a Rhaeadr Rastafari son, he heads to Holland with Patrick Haccou.
Making £3800 was a lamb from George Stuart’s Birness pen, he is by the 8000gns Rhaeadr Giggsy who has sired lambs to 20,000gns and out of a dam by Rhaeadr Flash Harry.
David and Paula Reed sold a lamb from their Calfpark flock for £3000, he sold in a three way split to Jimmy Douglas, Sandy Fraser and Messrs Robinson.
The only price of note in the Charollais ring in what was a very sticky trade was a Logie Durno Lynch Pin son from Langside, he is out of a dam by Hundalee and sold for £2000 to Paul Slatter.
Brian Ryder secured £3000 for a 15/16 Beltex shearling by Borderesk Powerpoint, he sold to the John Hall, Inglewood Edge.
Today’s production sale form Jimmy Douglas’ Cairness flock of Suffolks topped at 8000gns for a gimmer by Cairness Cylone. This one, 33H 11 101 is out of a dam by Muiresk King of Diamonds and goes back to the great breeding Muiresk Rainbow Quest. This ET sister to Cairness Custom sold in-lamb to Cairness Diamond Jubilee, a homebred tup lamb which Jimmy regards as one of the best he’s ever bred. She was claimed by Gary Beacom, Northern Ireland.
Following that in the Cairness run was a ewe by Cairness Achievement 33H N14. She is out of a dam by Whitestone Warrior and sold carrying lambs to Rhaeadr Roger Ramjet. Buying her was Gordon Troup, Aberdeenshire.
And at 2600gns Jimmy then sold another ewe, this time 33H L67, a Cairness Just the Best daughter out of a dam by Muiresk Zidane. In-lamb to Bailesy Streets Ahead and a full ET sister to Cairness Achievement, she was bought by E Williams, Yyns, Monmouthshire.
Then making 2100gns and selling to Sandy Fraser was a gimmer by Cairness Caius, 33H 11 016. This one is out of a dam by Cairness Coldplay and goes back to Muiresk Manat. She was sold in-lamb to Rhaeadr Roger Ramjet.
In the draft from Robbie Wilson’s Strathisla flock the top call was a bid of 4500gns for a gimmer by Strathisla Sea Bird, FNV 11 135. She is out of a dam by Strathisla Schumacher and is in-lamb to Rookery Rooney. Taking this one back across the water was Mark Priestley for the Limestone flock.
Another gimmer from Robbie then sold at 3000gns to the Soulsby family, with this one being FNV 11 077. Sired by Cairness Kaos she is out of a dam by Schumacher and was in-lamb to Forkins Figo.
At 2800gns came a bid from Messrs Wilson, Kelton, Castle Douglas for a gimmer by Glenhead Golden Phoenix and out of a dam by Strathisla Seabird. This one, FNV 11 117, is in-lamb to Strathisla Stifler.
Robbie then took 2600gns from Mark Priestley for a Sea Bird daughter out of a dam by Stathisla Speed which is ET sister to Schumacher. She is in-lamb to Stifler too.
Ross Lawrence then bid 2000gns for a Kaos daughter, FNV 11 052. She is out of a dam by Speed and was sold in-lamb to Forkins Figo.
Best from John Sinnett’s Stockton offering was a ewe lamb at 4000gns which sold to Jimmy Douglas. This one, 72H 12 1649, is by Conchar PR and out of a dam by Cairness Impact.
And topping Gordon Troup’s Whitestone draft was another heading back to Cairness. This was a gimmer, L25 11 006, by Cairness Liam and out of a Kings High and Mighty daughter. She sold in-lamb to Cairness Diamond Jubilee.
Averages: Cairness – 13 ewes £1190 and 32 gimmers £1038. Strathisla – seven ewes £769 and 21 gimmers £1524. Stockton – 12 ewe lambs £818. Whitestone – nine gimmers £940.
The champion from yesterday’s pre-sale show at Stirling has led the trade this afternoon at 28,000gns. This was Robbie Wilson’s first lamb in, FNV 12:090, a son of Rookery Rooney and out of a dam by Lakeview Leeroy. He sold in a three way split to Geoff Biddulph, Pexhill, Chris and Sally Holmes, Rookery, and Iain and Judith Barbour, Solwaybank.
Next best at 20,000gns was one from George Stuart’s Birness flock, 1W 12:044 (lot 164), a son of Rhaeadr Giggsy out of a dam by Rhaeadr Flash Harry. This one was knocked down to Patrick Donnelly, Donrho.
At 18,000gns was Myfyr Evans’ last lamb in (lot 201). This son of Ardlea Arbennig, the 90,000gns breed record holder, is out of a dam by Baileys Brigadier the Second. He sold in a four way split, with equal shares in this lamb taken by Robbie Wilson, Strathisla, Mark Priestley, Limestone, Patrick Grant and the Suffern family.
The champion from the pre-sale show, Jimmy Douglas’ Middlemuir Messi son has sold at 17,000gns, with the buyer believed to be the Robinson family, Northern Ireland. This was 33H 12:135 out of a dam by Muiresk King of Diamonds.
Selling at 8500gns was Robbie Wilson’s first of the day FNV 12:036, a son of Forkins Figo ET bred out of a Strathisla Schumacher daughter who’s dam as champion at the Highland in 2003 and 2004. Messrs Soulsby, Cumbria, bought this one.
A little earlier at 7000gns was another Messi son from Cairness, 33H 12:062. He is out of a dam by Cairness Achievement. Buying him was Jim Fleming, Halhill.
Today’s opening Suffolk sale of the season at Roscrea, Eire, saw a top call of E3100gns paid for the day’s male and overall champion, an Errigal Simply the Best son, 78A:022, from the Wilson family’s Shannagh flock. This one is out of a dam by Bailey Big Brother.
Second best of the day at E2700gns was another from the Shannagh flock and again by Simply the Best. This was 78A:12029 an ET bred lamb that is full brother to the sale leader.
Then making E2600gns was John Doherty’s best lamb of the day, a Clyda Cascada son from his Malinhead flock. This was CFN 12047 out of a dam by Lakeview Bart.
Fourth best of the sale was a E2500gns bid for the winner of the recorded ram lamb class, 88J 12009, a Cionn-Mhalanna D Best son from Mary and Mark Grealy. This one is out of a dam by Castlewellan Challenger and sold to the day’s judge John Christie, Stirling, for his Westcarse flock.
Following that at E2200gns was the reserve overall champion, another from the Shannagh flock, 78A 120020. This son of 20,000gns Cairness Achievement is out of a dam by Strathisla Dylan Thomas and goes back to a Castlewellan ewe by Birness First Choice.
At E2000gns was the winner of the novice ram class from the Deane family’s Mountford flock. This was PBO 12004, a son of Cairness Achievement out of a dam by noted sire Muiresk King of Diamonds. He was passed unsold in the ring at E1900gns, but sold later after some negotiations.
Herbert Stanley sold a lamb at the same money, with this one being 401 12028, a Burnview Top Flight son out of a dam by Conveth Caramello.
Top call in the females on offer was a E1200gns sale for the winner of the shearling ewe class and the day’s female champion, an Aughnakeeragh Captain daughter from the Knockogan flock of Micahel and James O’Connell. She is out of a dam by Castleisle Livewire.
There was a strong demand for Suffolk females with prices soaring to a top of 5,200 Euros at the 14th annual production sale from the noted Baileys flock.
Buyers travelled from throughout Ireland and the UK to the County Meath farm of Tom Bailey.
The sale leader was a January 2010 born gimmer by the flock’s jointly owned stock ram Cairness Kanine, and bred from a ewe by the 26,000gns Glenisla Syndey – reserve champion at Edinburgh in 2000. This much sought-after gimmer attracted a tussle of bids from the packed salering, with the successful bidder being David Duncan from Crumlin in County Antrim. This outstanding gimmer is in-lamb to the breed’s 2010 Sire of the Year Cairness Liam, which has produced sons to a top of 90,000gns.
Next best at 3,500 Euros was a Cairness New Approach daughter bred from a ewe by the 70,000gns Rhaeadr Rossi. This gimmer is bred from the same dam as the noted 8,000gns Baileys BMW – supreme champion at the Royal Highland and Royal Welsh shows last year. Carrying in-lamb to Cairness Kanine, she was snapped up by Patrick Grant from Kilcoo near Newry, County Down.
Cairness New Approach was also behind the breeding of a gimmer which caught the eye of Francis Mangan, Cappoquinn, County Waterford, at 3,000 Euros. This one was bred from a ewe by the 45,000gns Boreland Buddah. She is in-lamb to Rhaeadr Rossi – the 2006 Edinburgh and Royal Highland Show champion.
Also selling at 3,000 Euros was a Cairness Kanine daughter bred from a Perrinpit ewe by Davishill Dambuster. She was AI’d to Cairness Liam and sold to Geoffrey Douglas from Limavady, County Londonderry.
Ewes from the Baileys consignment sold to a top of 1,800 Euros, realised by a January 2009 born Cairness Almighty the Second daughter. She was bred from a Strathisla ewe by Strathisla Kingsway, and is in-lamb to the 70,000gns Rhaeadr Rossi. Buyer was English breeder C J Holmes from Rookery Farm, Broadway, Worcestershire.
Next best at 1,600 Euros was a January 2006 born Boreland Buddah ewe which goes back to the noted 10,000gns Kinmundy T1 ewe. She is in-lamb to the Baileys Bacchus son, Cairness Crean.
An entry of ewes from guest consignor Gerry Killilea from County Galway, reached a ceiling of 3,000 Euros. Leading the Carragh flock’s offering was a January 2009 born ET daughter of Baileys Masterpiece, bred from a ewe by Glenhead Glint O Gold. She won numerous prizes as a lamb and as a shearling. Scanned with twins by Ardlea Action, this one caught the eye of James Browne from Letterkenny, County Donegal.
Carragh gimmers peaked at 2,000 Euros, realised by an ET Baileys Masterpiece daughter, out of a ewe by Carragh Romeo. She is carrying twins by the Fordafourie President son, Cairness Direct Line. Buyer was Iain Barbour who runs the noted Solwaybank flock based at Beechgrove Farm in Annan, Dumfries.
An ET gimmer by the Strathisla Schumacher son, Debura Deezer, sold for 1,000 Euros, leading the guest consignment from Trevor Burke’s DeBruca flock based at Tuam in County Galway. Bred from a stylish Knockeroghery King daughter, this one is scanned in-lamb to Chessy James.
Averages: Baileys flock, 24 gimmers 1,609 Euros each and 13 ewes 900 Euros each; Carragh flock, 10 gimmers 1,050 Euros each and 12 ewes 1,158 Euros each; De Burca flock, 12 gimmers at 683 Euros each.
