De rammen staan binnen en zijn geschoren. Inmiddels hebben we nakomelingen van Bentley Jabulani, Sitlow Sidekick, Specop Nutcracker, Drinkstone Knock Out en Cairness Carbon (via KI). Ik ben erg te spreken over de eerste resultaten. De rammen staan in een ruime frisse stal met veel buitenlucht. Vorige week bij de ijzige wind had ik de deuren dicht gedaan en dat leidde meteen tot beginnende longontsteking Veel ventilatie dus!
Vandaag heb ik de tijdelijke stal weer gereed gemaakt. Net als vorig jaar heb ik de partytent van 50 m2 opgezet en ingericht met tijdelijke hekjes. Het is een ruime en lekker frisse stal door de grote deuropeningen en het gebruik van windbreekgaas. De stal staat in verbinding met de gewone stal. Nu al een groot aantal ooien heeft gelammerd kunnen zij straks lekker naar “buiten”. De stal is voorzien van een creepfeeder (voerbak met doorkruiphek) zodat de lammeren apart hardvoer kunnen opnemen.
Een heel gelukkig kerstfeest voor u allen!

It has started for this season!
De eerste lammeren van het seizoen zijn geboren! Afgelopen week heeft Ortum K24 twee mooie ramlammeren van Bentley Jabulani op de wereld gezet. Ortum J41 heeft dit jaar een knots van een ooilam geproduceerd. Lammeren allemaal zelf geboren en lekker actief.
Ik was wat verrast omdat ik de lammeren pas iets voor het nieuwe jaar verwachtte. Het is dus begonnen!
Here’s a full run down of the best prices from today’s Suffolk sale. Leading the prices at 6000gns twice was Robbie Wilson.
First to make this money was a shearling ewe, FNV L149, this is by Strathbeg Stan the Man and out of a dam by Glenho Gurka which is ET sister to last year’s Balmoral interbreed champion, she sold carrying a pair to Cairness Kaos. Buying this one was Mary Cornish, Devon.
Second to go at this money was the only ewe lamb forward from Robbie, FNV N39. This one is by Glenhead Golden Phoenix and out of a Strathisla Kingsway daughter. She is ET sister to Strathisla Dead Lucky and he dam was sold for 8500gns last year. Having stood first at this year’s Royal Highland Show she sold to Norman Robinson, Northern Ireland.Then making 5100gns was another from Robbie, a shearling by Strathisla Stoner and out of a dam by Glenhead the McCoy. She sold carrying triplets to Strathisla Sea Bird and is ET sister to last year’s reserve champion at Shrewsbury. This one was bought by L F Dunn, Muir of Ord.Following that at 3600gns was yet another of the Strathisla shearlings, this time a Stan the Man daughter, FNV L15. She is out of a Kingsway daughter and sold with twins to Strathisla Speed and was bought by Ross Lawrence.A 3100gns bid saw Robbie re-invest some of his earlier takings in a ewe lamb from the Meikleson dispersal of the Benzie family. This was for Strathisla Sea Bird daughter DZA N15. Out of a dam by Cairness Warlord, she was reserve breed champion at this year’s Turriff Show.
Selling at 2800gns was a Cairness Star Flyer-sired ewe from the Benzies. This one DZA K70 is out of a Muiresk Rainbow Quest-sired dam and sold in lamb to Strathisla Sea Bird. She was bought by an undisclosed buyer believed to be a high profile Aberdeenshire-based flock.
Making 2600gns was another shearling from Strathisla FNV L29, a Strathisla Schumacher daughter out of a dam by Kingsway and in lamb to Cairness Kaos and scanned carrying a pair. This one also went to Mr Dunn.
A pair then sold at 2400gns, with the first being a Strathisla ET bred shearling by Stan the Man and out of a dam by Kingsway. This one, FNV L101, was sold carrying a single to Speed and is ET sister to Sea Bird, Savoy, Bejing and Shadrach. This one went to Graeme Christie, Aberdeenshire.
The other at this price was a ewe lamb from the Meikleson dispersal. This was DZA N10, a Sea Bird daughter out of a dam by Glenhead Glint O Gold. She went to the Egglestone family, Leicestershire.
Then at 2100gns was FNV L153, again from Robbie’s run. This one is a Lakeview Leeroy daughter out of a dam by Strathisla Schumacher and carrying twins to Strathisla Sea Bird. She went to Ashley Bothwell. After that was one at 2000gns, this was a Strathisla shearling by Leeroy and out of a Deveronside the Messiah daughter. Carrying a pair to Sea Bird, she goes back to Fordafourie Rio.
Selling for 1950gns was the last of the Meikleson ewe lambs, a March-born Strathisla Speed daughter daughter out of a Roseden Rock Star daughter. She sold to Gary Owen, Wales. Close behind at 1900gns was another of the Benzie’s ewe lambs, a Sea Bird daughter out of a dam by Rock Star, she went to Mr Barnetson and Son.
It was back to the Strathisla shearlings for the first of two 1800gns calls, with this price paid for a Strathisla Speed daughter FNV L120. She is out of a dam by Bawnogue Blazing Star and is full sister to 10,000gns Strathisla Obama. Buying this one was Mr Dunn.
This one sold in-lamb with twins to Cairness Kaos. The second transaction at this money came for another of the Benzies’ ewe lambs, DZA N12, she is by Sea Bird and out of a dam by Cairness Ninety Nine. She was bought by Patrick Machray.
At 1600gns was yet another of the Strathisla shearlings, FNV L89, again by Speed this one is out of a dam by Strathisla Shirocco and sold in-lamb to Sea Bird with twins. This one headed home with Mr Dunn. Selling at 1550gns was another of the Meiklson shearlings, this time a Cairness Ninety Nine daughter out of a dam by Conveth Marci Marvellous. She was sold in-lamb to Sea Bird and was bought by Mr Warren.
Averages; Innfield 20 ewes £727.65, 26 shearlings £632.42, 13 ewe lambs £354.58; Meikleson 23 ewes £754.17, two shearling ewes £693, 22 ewe lambs £946.43; Strathisla 33 shearling ewes £1596.95, one ewe lamb £6300 (Harrison and Hetherington).

New interest for the Suffolk breed created a strong selling trade at the annual sale of in lamb females from the Cairness flock of Jimmy Douglas. Also this day were consignments from the Stockton flock of Messrs Sinnett and from the Hazeltree flock of County Turf Ltd, together with the Dispersal Sale of the Wells flock of Messrs Sleigh.
Buyers were attracted from Inverness, Aberdeenshire in the north down to Devon in the south. Also from both the north and south of Ireland and Europe.
Leading the sale at 12,000gns was a shearling gimmer from the Cairness flock. She was an ET daughter of Cairness Just The Best and carries the Muiresk Zidane breeding in her mothers pedigree. She sold in lamb to Cairness Liam and went to Dan Tynan of Co.Laois, Eire to form a new flock.
Following at 6,000gns was a ewe lamb shown by Messrs Sinnett. This January born single lamb, sired by Morris Lee and out of a Cairness Impact bred daughter, was knocked down to a joint purchase from Dan Tynan of Eire and Jimmy Douglas for his Cairness flock based in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire.
Next in line at 2,000gns was a pair of gimmers from the Cairness flock. First to capture the 2,000gn mark was an embryo daughter of Cairness Almighty The Second and out of a Crosemanor Commandeur sired mother who was grand-dam of the Edinburgh Champion sold earlier this season. This lady sold in lamb to Cairness Caeus and joins the Biffie flock for J & L Scott of Peterhead, Aberdeen.
Also reaching 2,000gns was the second Cairness gimmer entry, a Cairness Cold Play sired gimmer and bred from one of the best breeding ewe of the breed a Muiresk Manat daughter. She also sold in lamb to Cairness Caeus and goes to E Williams for this Gweirglodd flock near Llanfairpwll.
Selling for 1,900gns was a two shear ewe from the Cairness pen. Sired by Cairness Just The Best and bred from a Collessie Cut Above mother, this embryo ewe sold carrying Cairness Achievement sired lambs. She travels to Southern Ireland for Oliver Dean of Co.Kildaire, Eire.
Local breeder Darren Jones of the Thurston flock based on the outskirts of Carlisle paid 1,800gns for a daughter of the 68,000gn Muiresk Kings of Diamonds. This two shear ewe, out of a Cairness Cellnet bred mother, also sold in lamb to Cairness Caeus.
Also selling for 1,800gns was a ewe lamb from the Stockton flock. Sired by Rhaeadr Radar, and going back to Wells Extra Special on the mother pedigree, this stylish lady was knocked down to MW Waycott for this Longridge flock based in Devon.
Leading the Wells dispersal flock sale was a ewe lamb selling for 1,800gns. This was a Whitestone Warrior bred daughter and is out of a Glenho Royal Edition sired mother going back to Strathisla Kingsway on her pedigree. She was sold to Jimmy Douglas for his Cairness flock.
The top price for the Hazeltree flock was 750gns for a two shear ewe sired by Solwaybank Sovereign and bred from a Cairness U’ll Do mother. She sold in lamb to Cairness Just Lucky and sold to JGb & GM Redmayne of Staveley, Kendal.
Averages – Cairness flock 31 ewes £1,005.63, 30 gimmers £1,276.45. Stockton flock 17 ewes £599.74, 6 gimmers £920.50, 16 ewe lambs £1,171.41. Wells flock 25 ewes £602.70, 11 gimmers £683.45, 8 ewe lambs £543.38. Hazeltree flock 5 ewes £457.80, 10 gimmers £559.65.
I’ve now got a full report from Saturday’s Suffolk sale at Carlisle, so here is an updated account of the trade.
Selling for the day’s top price of 12,000gns was a shearling ewe from Jimmy Douglas’ Cairness flock. This one is an ET sister to both Cairness Achievement and 65,000gns Cairness Castello. This one, 33H L70, is by Cairness Just the Best and out of a dam by Muiresk Zidane. She sold in-lamb to Cairness Liam and heads to Eire to Dan Tynan, Doon, Montraith. Mr Tynan’s livestock enterprises are of course managed by Pat Greaney, formerly farm manager for Tom Bailey.
At 6000gns was a ewe lamb from John Sinnett’s Stockton flock, 72H N122, she is sired by Morris Les and out of a dam by Cairness Impact. This one sold in a two way split, with Jimmy Douglas and Dan Tynan each taking a half share in her.
A pair from Cairness then sold at 2000gns, with the first being the first of Jimmy Douglas’ shearlings, 33H L65. Sired by Cairness Almighty the Second and out of a dam by Crosemanor Commandeur which was bred in the Glenisla flock of the late Gordon Wilson, she was sold in lamb to Cairness Caeus. She was bought by J and L Scott, Maud, Peterhead.
The other at this price was 33h L56, an ET bred daughter of Cairness Cold Play out of an 11,000gns Muiresk bred dam by Muiresk Manat. She was also sold in lamb to Caeus. Buying this one was E Williams, Penmynydd, Llanfairpwll.
Next best from Cairness was a 1900gns sale for a one-crop ewe by Cairness Just the Best, 33H K53. She is ET bred out of an 11,000gns Laurelbank ewe by Collessie Cut Above and sold in lamb to Cairness Achievement. She went to Oliver Dean, Co Kildaire.
Then at 1800gns was an ET bred daughter of Muiresk King of Diamonds out of a dam by Cairness Cellnet. She was in lamb to Cairness Caeus and went to D Jones, Thurstonfield, Carlisle.
At the same money was another ewe lamb from Stockton, 72H N6. She is by Rhaedr Radar and out of a dam by Stockton Eric. Buying this one was Michael Waycott, Ashburton, Devon. And also at this price was the top prices lot from the Wells flock dispersal for the Sleigh family. This was a ewe lamb by Whitestone Warrior and out of a dam by Glenho Royal Edition. She headed back to Aberdeenshire with Jimmy Douglas.

SUFFOLK IN LAMB FEMALES & EMPTY HOGGS

A small but quality selection of Suffolk sheep were presented to the annual show and sale of in lamb females and empty ewe lambs held at Carlisle.

Father and son team, Hugh and Harry Annett of Widdington judged the pre-show classes and awarded the championship ticket to Mark Evans of West Yorkshire with a ewe lamb from his Jubilee flock. This eye catching lamb, a daughter of Strathbeg Stan The Man and out of a Strathisla bred mother, sold for the top price of sale at 1,500gns. She was knocked down to Northern Ireland breeders, AJ & NAJ Robinson of Downpatrick, Co.Down for their Benrafton flock.

The next price tag at 1,020gns also came from the Jubilee pen of Mark Evans. This four figure priced ewe lamb, sired by Strathisla St.Nicholas and was also out of a Strathisla bred mother. She sold to JM Nisbet of the Sornmains flock based near Mauchline, Ayrshire.
Selling for 700gns was the first entry from the Conveth flock of CA Proctor & Co, Turriff, Aberdeenshire. This shearling gimmer, a daughter of Strathisla Schumacher and bred from a home bred dam by Als’now Aristocrat, sold in lamb to Cairness Achievement to JM Nisbet of Mauchline.
Following at 660gns was a gimmer shown by Northumberland breeder Don Robertson of the Northyne flock. Sired by Glenhead Infusion and out of a Solwaybank Insignia sired mother, she sold in lamb to the homebred ram Northtyne Drifter. She was knocked down to TR & EA Milburn of Greenhead, Carlisle.

Topping the Thurston pen for local breeder Darren Jones was a three crop ewe. Collecting the reserve championship ticket, this daughter of Thurston Chieftain and out of a Cairness Spellbound sired mother, he was purchased by JA & M Gornall of Clitheroe, Lancs for their Pendleton flock.
Averages – 10 ewes £323.40, 36 shearling gimmers £418.54, 12 ewe lambs £493.50.
Vandaag ontving ik mijn Autotager2. Een tang om heel gemakkelijk schapen en geiten te oormerken. De oormerkjes zijn in strips van 20 stuks (20 enkele of 2 x 10 dubbele (elektronische oormerken) gemakkelijk in te brengen. Het is een product van een Schots bedrijf.
Het is een fantastisch apparaat waarmee het inbrengen van oormerken een fluitje van een cent is geworden. Nooit meer gerommel met losse nummers maar in 1 x alles doornummeren ook met dubbele nummers. De oormerken zijn vrij klein maar erg sterk en hebben een vrij kleine scherpe pin waardoor ze ook bij jonge lammeren nauwelijks een belasting vormen.
Nederlandse goedgekeurde oormerken worden (nog) niet geleverd maar ik heb het aangeschaft omdat ik ook de UK stamboeknummers moet inbrengen. De nummers zijn naar believen te bedrukken met tekst en cijferreeksen.
