Baileys Suffolk Flock Production Sale

The auction takes place on-farm at Batterstown (beside the football pitch), County Meath, on Saturday, November 27, commencing at
Baileys BMW – the 2010 Royal Highland and Royal Welsh Show champion. His great grand dam (lot 52) sells at the Baileys production sale on November 27.
The catalogue features 51 hoggets and 21 ewes, and offers pedigree breeders a unique opportunity to acquire some of the best Suffolk bloodlines available throughout Europe.
The flock is scrapie monitored and all stock are on the Heptavac P System. All entries are eligible for immediate export. Sheep purchased for export to Great Britain or Europe will be delivered to Carlisle, free of charge, on the week following the sale.
Many of the hoggets on offer are daughters of the Whitestone Warrior son, Cairness New Approach – purchased privately in 2008. Other sires represented include the jointly owned Cairness Kanine; the 32,000gns Solwaybank Special One; Cairness Almighty the Second and Beaufort Bullion.
Stars of the catalogue include a half sister (lot 33) to the 40,000gns Baileys Golden Star; a maternal grand daughter (lot 34) of the €32,000 Mullanboy Mohammed – Roscrea champion in 2004; and a half sister (lot 28) to Alastair Gault’s (Forkins) prize winning stock ram, Baileys on Ice.
The 70,000gns Rhaeadr Rossi, Edinburgh champion in 2006. He is the service sire of some of the hoggets and ewes on offer at the Bailey’s production sale.
All hoggets have been served or AI’d to leading rams such as the 70,000gns Rhaeadr Rossi – 2006 Edinburgh and Royal Highland Show champion, and 2007 Sire of the Year; and the 75,000gns Edinburgh champion (1998) Stockton Almighty. Others have been AI’d to Cairness Kanine, Cairness Charles, the home-bred Baileys Bacchus – sire of the 2010 Edinburgh champion; and the 26,000gns Glenisla Sydney – reserve champion at Edinburgh in 2000.
The 21 ewes on offer range in age from January 2003 to January 2008. They are bred from rams such as Glenisla Sydney, Solwaybank Ranger, Cairness Tremendous, Stockton Gold Nugget , Rhaeadr Rossi, and the 45,000gns Boreland Buddah.
The service sires of the ewes catalogued include Cairness Charles, Rhaeadr Rossi and Cairness Kanine.
One of the ewes on offer is the great grand dam (lot 52) of Baileys BMW – the 2010 Royal Highland and Royal Welsh Show champion; while another (lot 55) is the dam of the 7,000gns Baileys Bugatti. The ewe portion of the catalogue features some of the breed’s best known and proven bloodlines, and also includes a ewe (lot 56) from the same family as the 40,000gns Baileys Golden Star; (lots 62 and 72) whose grand dam is a half sister to the 68,000gns Muiresk King of Diamonds; and (lot 70) whose dam is twin sister to the 45,000gns Boreland Buddah.
The 75,000gns Stockton Almighty, Edinburgh champion in 1998. He is the service sire of some of the hoggets catalogued for the 13th annual production sale from the Baileys Suffolk flock.
ET ewes featured in the catalogue include (lot 65) whose Muiresk Marci Marvellous dam, S46:U42, was three times champion at the Royal Highland Show; and (lot 66) which is a half sister to Baileys Masterpiece.
Founded by Jeff and Tom Bailey in 1989 the flock is recognised throughout Ireland and the UK for its achievements in both the show and sale rings. From 1992 to 2009 the Baileys flock has notched up numerous Royal Show awards, including 7 interbreed championships, 3 reserve interbreed championships, 13 supreme championships, 11 reserve championships, and 33 male and female champion and reserve awards.
The Baileys flock is three times winner of the prestigious Bristol Gold Cup – and is the only flock in Ireland to win the award. It has also scooped the Sainsbury Cup, for the best ewe lamb in the national flock competition, on five occasions.
Over the years stock rams have been carefully chosen, with the selection criteria based on breed characteristics such as good colour, easy fleshing, strong legs and level top lines. All rams used in the past 11 years have been ARR/ARR.
