SUFFOLK IN LAMB FEMALES & EMPTY HOGGS

A small but quality selection of Suffolk sheep were presented to the annual show and sale of in lamb females and empty ewe lambs held at Carlisle.

Father and son team, Hugh and Harry Annett of Widdington judged the pre-show classes and awarded the championship ticket to Mark Evans of West Yorkshire with a ewe lamb from his Jubilee flock. This eye catching lamb, a daughter of Strathbeg Stan The Man and out of a Strathisla bred mother, sold for the top price of sale at 1,500gns. She was knocked down to Northern Ireland breeders, AJ & NAJ Robinson of Downpatrick, Co.Down for their Benrafton flock.

The next price tag at 1,020gns also came from the Jubilee pen of Mark Evans. This four figure priced ewe lamb, sired by Strathisla St.Nicholas and was also out of a Strathisla bred mother. She sold to JM Nisbet of the Sornmains flock based near Mauchline, Ayrshire.
Selling for 700gns was the first entry from the Conveth flock of CA Proctor & Co, Turriff, Aberdeenshire. This shearling gimmer, a daughter of Strathisla Schumacher and bred from a home bred dam by Als’now Aristocrat, sold in lamb to Cairness Achievement to JM Nisbet of Mauchline.
Following at 660gns was a gimmer shown by Northumberland breeder Don Robertson of the Northyne flock. Sired by Glenhead Infusion and out of a Solwaybank Insignia sired mother, she sold in lamb to the homebred ram Northtyne Drifter. She was knocked down to TR & EA Milburn of Greenhead, Carlisle.

Topping the Thurston pen for local breeder Darren Jones was a three crop ewe. Collecting the reserve championship ticket, this daughter of Thurston Chieftain and out of a Cairness Spellbound sired mother, he was purchased by JA & M Gornall of Clitheroe, Lancs for their Pendleton flock.
Averages – 10 ewes £323.40, 36 shearling gimmers £418.54, 12 ewe lambs £493.50.
